Pictorial Map

Pictorial maps place emphasis on significant elements associated with an area of interest by depicting them as exaggerated and artistic illustrations arranged close to where they are actually located in the real world. Often they are related to a certain theme that may be more specific then just the area of interest. Themes include agriculture, tourist attractions, historical places, or restaurants. Scale is not accurate in pictorial maps but direction in roughly maintained.

In this pictorial map of Atlanta, Georgia, there are several exaggerated elements significant to Atlanta. The cluster of skyscrapers in the center of the image represents Downtown Atlanta. Other places that have been emphasized by artistic exaggeration are Stone Mountain, Turner Field, and the Chattahoochee River. The map’s central theme could be "Major Landmarks in Atlanta."
